Six Months and Counting

It has been exactly 6 months since I started this blog, or more accurately since I created my first blog post. In reality, the blog started nearly 10 years ago when we moved to this property. Even though I just started writing recently, I started learning a long time ago. As we transform our property into one based on permaculture, it is about those experiences from which I’ve learned so much that I now share with you.

I’ve always liked experimenting with projects, willingly failing at some in exchange for the knowledge that can be gained. Over the last 6 months, I’ve found that writing about some of the topics where I’ve dabbled but I’m not an expert has forced me to do more research. For that I’m grateful because the blog has motivated me to expand my understanding of many topics.

It has been said that you can only learn so much when someone teaches you something. You learn more by doing it yourself. But you learn the most when you teach someone else to do it. I believe that writing about our projects is a form of teaching, therefore it is strengthening my knowledge. I enjoy the projects we do on our property, and it is my privilege to share it with you.

I expect to continue the search for knowledge for the rest of my life. Maybe it’s just my natural curiosity about things. I guess the time I took the phone apart when I was 11 should have been a clue. I’m not sure why, but I’ve been doing it my entire life and I’m sure I’ll keep doing it. The search for knowledge is meant to be a lifelong pursuit.

I have to give credit where credit is due. While I’ve always had a preparedness mindset, some of my inspiration has come from Jack Spirko and The Survival Podcast. It has been a call to action for me to keep moving toward self-sufficiency. Similarly, much of my motivation to create the blog also comes from Jack and his business podcast Five Minutes with Jack. He published all the episodes from 2010-2012, yet most of it is still relevant. I listened to it back then but it still took me 3 more years to get moving. Now I refer back to it periodically when I need inspiration to keep at it.

When I started the blog, I wasn’t sure where it would take me. I made a commitment to myself to publish posts at least 3 days a week consistently. Sometimes it hasn’t been easy, but so far I’ve kept that commitment. This is the 90th post, and today I’m reaffirming the commitment to keep going. I still don’t know where this will end up, and that’s part of the fun of it. As are so many of my endeavors, it is a journey – not a destination.
