Video Review: “The Permaculture Orchard: Beyond Organic”

Recently I came across this wonderful video while reading on the Permies.com web site. After watching it, I have to say it is a breath of fresh air. The video quality is very professional. The entire video is full of useful tips and ideas for the budding permaculturist.

One of the people responsible for bringing us this video is Paul Wheaton. He is the main man at Permies.com. Anyone who is familiar with Paul knows about his sense of humor. It is evident in the opening credits where he is listed as “supreme executive producer with bacon, cheese, and sparkles.” That would seem to set the tone for the rest of the video. While it is sprinkled with some light humor, this video is far from a comedy. In my opinion, it contains a very important message.

In my previous post, What Is Real Food?, I talked about organic foods and what “beyond organic” means to me. Stefan Sobkowiak is the star of the video and the owner of the orchard. He does a good job explaining how he produces “beyond organic” fruits through good stewardship of the soil in his orchard. He explains how he addresses disease and pests without the use of hazardous chemicals. He talks about how he creates an environment where he can share his bounty with bees, birds, and rabbits among others.

In one segment, Stefan explains how he plants his trees in “trios” he calls NAP. N is for nitrogen fixers, A is for apple, and P is for plum or pear. Each trio of 3 trees consists of one each so that there is variety in adjacent trees, reducing the chances of disease and pest problems.

By far, my favorite segment was about pruning. Stefan explains how to prune the fruit trees for the best fruit production. At one point, he says “do you want a tree – or a fruit tree?” He goes on to explain what he means and step-by-step how to prune them. He also shows how he trains the limbs to grow horizontally with wires so they will bear fruit sooner. This segment alone is worth the price of the video.
